The “Christmas Fern” is a beautiful fern that grows natively on our mountain alongside the spring-fed stream. Its fronds are deep green and thicker than other ferns, which makes them last well both on the plant and in a vase! The fern is an evergreen, and is a perennial, which means you’ll enjoy it all year long and each year after, as we do. The evergreen trait is why this fern is commonly called the “Christmas Fern.” In areas where there is a ‘killing frost,’ the fern’s fronds will stay green but will fall to the ground. This is beneficial to the microbes, insects, and other little critters who hide under the fronds to overwinter, and it helps build and hold the soil beneath the fronds. On our land, the fern is native and is located where nature placed it – this is always near the stream, and often on slopes where the fern helps control erosion.
We hike into the forest along the stream to collect these ferns. There is an abundance of them, so we are able to sustainably (ie. without harming our precious ecosystem) collect them to sell in limited quantities here. We want to do our part to help get these ferns into other locations where they will be both appreciated and helpful.
You’ll receive a healthy rhizome from us, which should produce several full fronds the first season you have it.
